How to get to Svalbard, and how much time to leave around the trip you booked

Svalbard is an archipelago in the high Arctic and Longyearbyen is its main settlement. There is no road and no ferry from anywhere; you come by air, into the airport that serves the town. Flights arrive from mainland Norway, and in practice people route through Oslo or Tromsø to get onto one. Whatever your starting city, the last leg is the one that decides your trip.

That is worth saying plainly because the last leg is also the one with the fewest alternatives. If a connection slips on a route between two large cities, another aircraft leaves shortly after. This is not that kind of route. Build the margin in deliberately: arrive in the mainland departure city with real time in hand, and do not plan the last connection of the day if an earlier one exists.

On arrival the geography is friendly. The airport is a few minutes outside Longyearbyen, the town is small enough to cross on foot, and the trips on this site either meet in town or collect you: $206, $235, $190, $143, $259, $259 and $508 all list pickup as available, and $1,209 includes the transfer in the fare.

Leaving works the same way in reverse, with one addition: on a day you fly out, do not book a trip that runs longer than a couple of hours. A nine-hour boat day and a departure do not belong on the same page of a calendar.

Three nights is the shape that works. The arrival day is not a touring day: you land, you find your room, you walk the town, and you let the weather show you what it is doing. The two full days after it are what you actually came for, and the departure day takes whatever is left, which is usually nothing.

Put the long item on the first full day, not the last. In winter that is a cave trip — $344 at three and a half hours, our top pick at 5.0, or the seven-hour $926 if you want the whole day on a snowmobile. In summer it is $508 at nine hours. Putting it early leaves you a spare day inside the trip, which matters here: weather moves things, and a trip that shifts by a day is only a problem if there is no day left to shift into.

Fill the shorter slots with things that run regardless. $158 is three hours underground at Gruve 3 and runs all year with 515 reviews behind it at 4.8. $132 is two and a half hours through the town. $129 is two hours by car out through Adventdalen and the old mining ground, and it is the lowest fare on this site. Those three will hold a day together when the bigger plan moves.

If you are down to a single day on the ground, be honest about it and book one thing. $318 is two and a half hours and private, which is the shortest route into a cave here; in summer, $143 gives you a plateau and a view in the same amount of time. Trying to stack two long trips into one day on Svalbard is how people end up seeing neither properly.

This is the single most useful thing to understand before you book flights. The trips here do not vary by season, they swap. In the cold months the ground is snow and the fjord is not a road for boats: that is when the four cave listings run, when $302 takes you up to a glacier on snowshoes, and when the sky is dark enough for $206 and $235.

In the light months the snow goes, the water opens and the boat days appear: $508 for nine hours to the abandoned town and the glacier front, $1,209 for the private photography version. The tundra walks come into their own, and $249 notes rich birdlife from June to August on its own listing. From late April to late August the sun does not set at all, which stretches what you can fit into a day.

A few things ignore the calendar. Gruve 3 is underground and runs year-round. The drives and walks out towards the Seed Vault run through the year and show it from outside — the building is not open to visitors, and no listing here pretends otherwise. The town walk runs whenever there are people to walk with.

So pick the holiday first and the dates second. If the caves are the reason you are going, do not book a July flight and hope; if the boat and the light are the reason, do not book February.
